Shock absorbers and struts, more appropriately referred to as “dampers” are among the major contributors to a vehicle’s ride quality and handling, defining how a car performs through road asperities and ensuring optimal contact of the tire with the road.  Shock absorbers mainly guarantee vehicle handling by controlling the relative movement of the chassis against the suspension, which is exposed to vibrations picked up by the tires. They limit vehicle body’s vertical or sideways movement based on road conditions, stabilising the ride and tires. Vehicles typically have one shock absorber per tire, and stabilising the ride helps minimise tire wear, apart from overall suspension wear. Most vehicles utilise a combination of various leaf springs, coil springs and struts to stabilise and control a vehicle’s movement.

For over a decade, technical emphasis has been on developing dampers with variable damping rate based on road conditions. This not only caters to driver comfort with the help of soft damping, but also offers safety on jerky or potholed road surfaces. The efforts made in driving enhancements in technology so as to offer a smoother ride have led to the development of a diversified market, particularly at the supplier end.
