Considering the current technology prevalent in the market, the performance and efficiency of EVs ( BEVs and full HEVs ) seem closely interlinked with their operating temperature. The various components which make up the modern EV need to be brought to an ideal operating temperature quickly and then maintained within the band. This is crucial to not only to ensure maximum gains but also in the interest of comfort, safety, and component life. Of particular challenge is the heating of cabin and the onboard battery, which is commonly handled by energy-intensive PTC and resistive heaters. These solutions through effective can compromise the electric driving range of the vehicles significantly. One of the ways this design challenge is being tackled is with the increased application of heat recovery systems in BEVs and full HEVs. The various central EV ( BEV and full HEV ) modules produce heat as a by-product. If this excess heat can be harvested and rerouted to where the heat is needed, the reliance on the more energy-hungry heating elements can be rationed, and overall efficiency boasted.
